A Study for Developing a Teaching Curriculum in a Christian Worldview Regarding Education of a Gender Equality Consciousness in Elementary Schools

The purpose of the study is to develop a teaching curriculum to help students learn a sense of gender equality from a Christian perspective. The study has analyzed gender equality education programs wide-spread in public elementary schools at this contemporary time, attempted to identify the core values of a Christian gender equality consciousness, and developed teaching materials based on them. To find a gender equality consciousness in a Christian worldview, the study has examined what the Bible tells us about men and women. The study has investigated perspectives on the masculinity and femininity in the story of creation, in Jesus' ministries, and in St. Paul's Epistles. Based on this investigation, the study has articulated two Christian core values of the gender equality consciousness as “equivalence” and “inter-complementarity” of male and female. The teaching curriculum in a Christian worldview divides into total five lessons. The first class looks at the meanings of gender discrimination and helps students to prepare for having a good relationship with the other sex in daily life. The second lesson aims to help the kids recognize and respect for physical and psychological differences between men and women. The third and fourth classes help the students reflect on distorted images of masculinity and femininity and have a critical attitude towards androgyny. Finally, the curriculum concludes with helping the students understand that genuine gender equality takes place when they help each other with thoughtful consideration.
